Memorial I commemorates the sacrifices of Portland firefighters made in service to their city. The memorial balances the recognition of the individual within a larger historical pattern. Located alongside the Willamette River, the memorial is a gathering space conceived as an outdoor room and a container of light. There are two experiential zones within the design. At the ground level linear stone elements are rooted into the earth. In the sky above, vertical beacons define a unique illuminated pattern of loss visible across the city.
